Money Well Spent?

Today it is 12th Rabi ul Awwal & according to the Islamic Hijri Calendar this dates holds a great significance as it is the date on which the Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) was born in the barren terrains of Makkah. This day is widely celebrated across the sub-continent countries of Pakistan & India, with great vigour & zeal. Various villages, towns, colonies & cities that are populated by a Muslim Majority are decorated beautifully. Mosques & various public gathering places, such as parks are among the most commonly decorated places. A large sum of money is being collected & allocated to decorate & set up stages for Naat Khuwanis, white wash the walls of Imam Bargahs & Mosques, Painting of the Domes in Green to depict the the Dome of Masjid e Nabvi. Now my question is that is the ‘Money being well spent? esp. when the amount that is being spent on such activities amounts to millions of Rupees.

Now it is a good thing as Muslims, we should renovate our Mosques on regular basis & make them even more beautiful, but seriously; incorporating the Naat Culture on this special day isn’t my idea of attaining spirituality. It seems a bit odd to see thousands of people attending these mosques in order to listen to various Naats. For those of you who are not aware of what a Naat is, a Naat is a combination of phrases/verses that praise the Holy Prohpet (P.B.U.H) which altogether is a good thing, but isn’t it better if we spend the day by keeping a fast & on the eve of 12th of Rabi ul Awwal pray some extra Nawafil or Recite the Holy Quran instead? What could be more spiritually beneficial than reciting Almighty Allah’s revealed Book? or perhaps we should spend the day by recalling the biographical events of the life of our Beloved Holy Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H).

Instead of setting up well lit stages & calling in on someone who is a professional Naat reader, The very same amount of Money could be well spent on the uplift of the Islamic Society as a whole. Educating an underprivileged person or donating the same amount of money to a charity organisation might hold more spiritual value in the sight of the Almighty Allah than simply attending a traditional Naat Khuwani.

In cities the situation is quite good as compared to some of the rural areas, where Naat culture is misinterpreted by the locals & converted into a more sort of a concert type of event. A large number of people can be easily seen dancing to various Naats, The money that is being spent on decorating Mosques, should be used to ensure that such acts are not committed under the banner of Isam. By educating these individuals we can eradicate illiteracy, which is the root cause of various religious intolerance. Religious People in Pakistan seem more interested in hurling insults to the members of different Islamic sects. They are often seen fighting amongst themselves on minor issues & the problems of the society that should be addressed are never considered worthy enough to be discussed. Most of them seem to have forgotten the golden rule. i.e

‘Divided we fall but United we Stand’

I am not stating that we should stop praising the Holy Prophet(P.B.U.H). NO, mind you! I am only suggesting various alternatives where that money could be put to a good use.

Allah says in the Glorious Qur’an (Surah 33:56)

“Surely Allah and His angels bless the Prophet; O you who believe call for (Divine) blessings on him and salute him with a (becoming) salutation.”
